IGP, National Defence College Discuss Police Reform, State Policing

-

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to deepening collaboration with the National Defence College (NDC) to advance police reform, internal security and national development.

The commitment was made on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the Commandant, management, directing staff, participants and support staff of the National Defence College to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Discussions at the meeting focused on police reform, state policing, command and coordination protocols, as well as other emerging internal security issues.

The NDC delegation was led by the Commandant, Rear Admiral A. Ahmed. Other members included Major General K. E. Chigbu, Deputy Commandant and Director of Studies; Air Vice Marshal E. Owai, College Secretary; Prof. A. O. Ahmad, Provost, Centre for Strategic Research and Studies (CSRS); Brigadier General G. Oyinlola; Brigadier General J. M. Chima; Commodore A. N. Umaru; Colonel M. Haribu; Colonel T. O. Samson; Colonel M. I. Ajibike; Colonel A. A. Abdulhalim; and police participants comprising CP S. A. Afunluhi, DCP S. Yahaya, DCP O. O. Yusuf and DCP I. B. Usang.

Speaking during the visit, Rear Admiral Ahmed said the research paper presented to the Inspector-General was produced entirely by police officers participating in the College’s programme, with faculty members providing only academic guidance and methodological support.

He explained that the participants leveraged their professional experience, critical thinking and research skills to develop practical and implementable strategic recommendations aimed at strengthening policing in Nigeria.

According to him, the findings and recommendations would enrich ongoing national discussions on police reform and enhance the Nigeria Police Force’s capacity to tackle current and emerging internal security challenges through to 2035.

Responding, the Inspector-General described the study as timely and relevant to Nigeria’s evolving security environment, commending the participants for producing a research work of high scholarly and practical value.

Disu said the study provides a solid foundation for shaping the framework for state policing, noting that its comprehensive methodology, analysis of public concerns and comparative assessment of countries operating state police systems would support future policy development.

He reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s resolve to sustain strategic partnerships with the National Defence College and other institutions to strengthen policing, improve internal security and promote national development. #Securitynewsalert.com
