The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the deaths of two senior officers, Assistant Inspector-General of Police (Rtd) Adeleke Taiwo Olatunde and Commissioner of Police Hassan Saleh Gwani, describing their passing as a “profound” loss to the institution.
AIG Olatunde died at his residence in Lagos on July 23, 2026. CP Gwani died four days earlier, on July 19, while undergoing treatment at the Saudi German Hospital in Cairo, Egypt, following a brief illness. He was buried in Cairo in accordance with Islamic rites.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the Force said both men had served “meritoriously” for close to three decades, praising their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to public safety.
Olatunde enlisted into the Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on May 18, 1992, beginning a career that spanned more than 33 years. He held several key command and operational roles across the Abia, Lagos, Osun, and Benue State Commands, as well as at Force Headquarters.
Among his notable postings were Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at Ikire, Assistant Commissioner and later Deputy Commissioner of Operations at the Western Ports Authority in Lagos, and Commander of the SWAT Unit at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Headquarters. He rose to the rank of AIG Operations before retiring on November 3, 2025. He is survived by his wife and children.
Gwani, born on November 11, 1970, hailed from Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State. He enlisted in the Force on November 10, 1997, and went on to serve in several strategic roles over nearly 30 years before he died in Cairo.
