IGP Orders Nationwide Crackdown on Unregistered, Concealed Number Plates

-

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered Commissioners of Police, Tactical Commanders, and Heads of Formations across the country to intensify enforcement against vehicles operating without registration number plates or with concealed, altered, defaced, or obscured plate numbers.

Disu issued the directive at the monthly strategic conference of senior Nigeria Police Force officers held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The IGP described the growing trend as unlawful and a serious threat to public safety and national security, warning that criminal elements often exploit unidentified vehicles to commit offences and evade law enforcement.

“Vehicle registration remains a critical component of crime prevention, intelligence gathering, and law enforcement,” he said.

Under the directive, all police commands are to immediately commence enforcement operations nationwide. Vehicles found without approved registration plates or with tampered details will be stopped, impounded, and processed in line with existing laws.

Disu urged vehicle owners to ensure full compliance, stressing that enforcement would be applied without preferential treatment.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and crime prevention.
