The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Thursday, 14 August 2025, hosted the Special Assistant to the President on ICT Development and Digital Innovation, Mr. Tokoni Peter Igoin, alongside a delegation of top figures in Nigeria’s financial technology sector, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the fintech industry in combating cybercrime and enhancing national cybersecurity. Delegates, including senior executives from PalmPay, OPay, and TrikaHealth, pledged full support for the IGP’s vision of leveraging Artificial Intelligence and other technological innovations to boost policing operations and secure Nigeria’s digital space.
The team highlighted ongoing projects, particularly the soon-to-be-commissioned NPF National Cybercrime Centre in Bayelsa State, developed in line with the IGP’s directive to decentralise the cybercrime centre for more effective response across the federation.
Commending the NPF for creating a supportive environment for fintech growth, the delegation praised the IGP’s leadership for fostering stronger synergy between security agencies and economic stakeholders. They noted that his openness to innovation has enhanced investor confidence and provided a platform for responsible technological advancement.
In his remarks, the IGP expressed delight at the fintech sector’s commitment to working closely with the police in safeguarding both physical and digital assets. He stressed that protecting financial technology platforms is crucial to securing citizens, businesses, and the nation’s economic stability. He added that sustained collaboration and the deployment of advanced tools will significantly boost the Force’s capacity to combat cybercrime and address emerging digital threats.
In a related development, the IGP also received members of the Centre for Peace and Security Studies Alumni Association, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, and his colleagues from postgraduate studies at the Louis Edet House, Abuja.
The delegation, comprising Barr. Jacob Ayanda, Lt. Col. Ahmed Bello, Abiodun Ayodele, Adeniji Atinuke, Christiana Abayomi-Oluwole, Atolage Mikail, and Fatiu Raji Gboyega commended the IGP for his achievements in peace and security, particularly in community policing, crime reduction, technological innovation, and police–community relations. They expressed readiness to collaborate intellectually on strategies and policies for effective policing and national security.
Welcoming them as key partners, the IGP reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to building lasting collaborations that strengthen public trust and enhance Nigeria’s security architecture. He emphasised the NPF’s openness to engaging with academia and other stakeholders in advancing his reform-driven agenda.
