The Nigeria Police Force has reassured citizens of sustained security vigilance across the country amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and their possible global effects.
In a statement issued on March 1, 2026, sighted by Securitynewsalert.com, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, had directed police commands nationwide to intensify surveillance and intelligence gathering.
According to the police, the directive applies to all Commissioners of Police in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with special attention to the North West, North East and North Central regions.
“The Inspector-General of Police reassures all Nigerians of the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to the protection of lives, property, and national peace, in light of evolving geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and their potential global implications,” the statement said.
The police noted that although Nigeria remains stable, proactive and intelligence-led policing measures have been reinforced to prevent any spillover effects from foreign conflicts.
As part of the new security steps, state commands have been instructed to increase surveillance, strengthen collaboration with traditional and religious leaders, and boost visible policing around worship centres and public places.
“The Force has reinforced proactive, intelligence-led policing measures across the country,” the statement added, noting that officers have also been tasked with swiftly addressing any attempt by individuals or groups to exploit global developments to incite unrest or sectarian tension.
The police further warned that Nigeria would not be used as a platform for external conflicts.
“The Nigeria Police Force reiterates that Nigeria will not serve as a theatre for foreign conflicts. Any attempt to import external ideological or religious tensions into the country will be met with the full weight of the law,” the statement said.
Disu also called on community leaders to continue promoting peace and urged citizens to remain calm and vigilant.
He encouraged Nigerians to report suspicious activities to the nearest police formation as part of efforts to maintain national security.
