Kano State Command Unveils Specialised Violent Crime Response Unit

-

The security architecture of Kano State, Commissioner of Police CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, formally inaugurated the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) on April 24, 2026.

The establishment of this elite tactical division follows a direct mandate from the Inspector General of Police and aligns with the statutory provisions of the Nigeria Police Act 2020.

The VCRU is designed as a specialised, intelligence-driven force tasked with the decisive suppression of armed robbery, kidnapping, and other high-profile violent crimes that have challenged the region.

According to official statements from the Command, the unit represents a significant shift toward professional, accountable policing aimed at reclaiming public trust through surgical, data-led operations.

The mandate of the new unit extends beyond mere tactical intervention; it is tasked with the full cycle of crime management, including the investigation and prosecution of suspects. Command officials emphasised that all operations would be conducted in strict adherence to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and international human rights standards.

“The security of lives and property in Kano State is non-negotiable,” Commissioner Bakori stated during the inauguration. “The VCRU represents our renewed commitment to intelligence-led, professional policing that respects the rights of all citizens. It is indeed a new dawn in crime prevention, management, and control.”

Addressing concerns regarding the conduct of tactical units, the Command assured the public that every officer deployed to the VCRU has undergone a rigorous vetting process and mandatory training in human rights and professional conduct.

To ensure transparency, the unit will operate under the scrutiny of a State Civilian Oversight Board, featuring representatives from civil society, traditional institutions, and the legal profession.

The Commissioner further emphasised his personal stake in the unit’s success, noting his direct supervision over its activities. “I take personal responsibility for its conduct, performance, and public image,” Bakori said. “I call on all residents of Kano State to cooperate with and support the VCRU. Together, we will make Kano safer.”

To facilitate seamless communication between the police and the public, the Command has appointed a VCRU State Media Liaison Officer.

A dedicated public complaints hotline and a physical help desk are being established at the unit’s operational base, with a standing guarantee that all public grievances will be acknowledged and addressed within 24 hours.

CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Police Public Relations Officer, urged residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information to assist the unit. While the official channels for public engagement are set to be released in the coming days, the Command maintains that this new initiative marks a pivotal step toward a more transparent and responsive security framework for the people of Kano.
