The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, on Thursday presented 157 cheques totalling ₦89,201,523.07 to the families and next-of-kin of deceased police officers who served under the Command.
The presentation, which took place at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja, formed part of claims processed under the welfare and insurance schemes of the Nigeria Police Force, designed to provide financial relief to the families of officers who died in the line of duty.
Speaking at the event, CP Fatai said the gesture reflected the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, to the welfare of its personnel and the dependants of officers who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation.
While acknowledging that no amount of money could replace the lives lost, the Commissioner said the payments demonstrated the Force’s resolve to honour the sacrifices of the fallen officers and ensure their families were not left to fend for themselves.
CP Fatai extended his condolences to the beneficiaries and urged them to make judicious use of the funds, especially towards the welfare and education of the children and other dependants left behind by the deceased officers. He further reassured serving personnel that the welfare of officers and their families remains a top priority for the Force, and pledged the Command’s continued commitment to ensuring the prompt processing of legitimate claims for the families of departed personnel.
He added that although the funds could never truly compensate for the loss of a loved one, the intervention was intended to bring some measure of relief to affected families and to reaffirm that the sacrifices of fallen officers would not be forgotten.
In a statement issued after the event, the Lagos State Police Command commended the Inspector-General of Police for the intervention and reiterated its heartfelt sympathy and continued solidarity with the beneficiary families.
