Lagos Task Force Ends Statewide Awareness Campaign With Warning to Traffic, Environmental Offenders

-

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, popularly known as the Task Force, on Thursday wrapped up a statewide public awareness campaign on traffic and environmental violations, warning residents that continued disregard for the law will attract enforcement action.

The grand finale, held on October 15, 2026, took place in Oshodi, Ikeja, Iyana Ipaja, Iba, Ojo, Kosofe and Lagos Island. Task Force officials engaged motorists, commercial drivers, street traders and other road users on traffic discipline, environmental sanitation and public order.

The campaign, themed “Towards Achieving Traffic and Environmental Orderliness and Public Safety in Lagos State: The Dos and Don’ts,” had earlier been carried out across the state’s Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas.

The agency’s Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, personally led his team on the Oshodi axis of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, where they ran what the Task Force called a “Warning Before Enforcement” exercise. It was designed to encourage voluntary compliance before any enforcement begins.

Akerele and his team urged motorists, drivers and traders to obey traffic regulations, keep pedestrian walkways and public spaces clear, and avoid activities that block traffic flow or harm environmental cleanliness.

He explained that the campaign complements the agency’s enforcement duties by ensuring residents know the relevant laws and have a chance to correct violations.

According to Akerele, the team took the exercise to major roads, commercial centres and densely populated areas because those are the places where traffic and environmental problems are most pronounced.

He stressed that lasting traffic management and environmental orderliness cannot be achieved through enforcement alone, adding that the cooperation of motorists, transport unions, traders, market associations, community leaders and residents is essential.

The Chairman warned that public roads, walkways and other infrastructure must not be turned into unauthorised trading spaces or used in ways that obstruct movement and endanger public safety. Commercial drivers were urged to observe traffic rules, while street traders were advised to operate only from permitted locations and stay off roadways and walkways.

He made clear that persistent violators would face appropriate enforcement measures.

Akerele said the initiative reflects the commitment of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration to a cleaner, safer and more orderly Lagos through public enlightenment, stakeholder collaboration and enforcement of existing laws.

The agency said the campaign, which began with engagements across the LGAs and LCDAs, was meant to deepen public awareness, promote responsible citizenship and strengthen cooperation between government and residents in tackling traffic congestion, environmental violations and other activities that undermine public order.

It described the campaign’s conclusion as another step toward building a culture of compliance and shared responsibility for public safety and environmental sustainability in the state.

The Task Force called on Lagosians to heed the warnings and guidance given during the exercise, stressing that keeping the environment safe, clean and orderly is a collective responsibility. It also reaffirmed its commitment to continued public sensitisation, stakeholder engagement and professional enforcement.
