Lagos Taskforce Warns Against Security-Risk Disinformation Campaigns, Threatens Legal Action

-

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce) has issued a stern warning against the circulation of stale and maliciously repackaged allegations of misconduct against its operatives.

The Agency stated that such coordinated misinformation campaigns pose a direct threat to the state’s security architecture by deliberately inciting public resentment against law enforcement institutions.

In a sharply worded reaction to a recent online publication, the Taskforce condemned the report as a calculated attempt to revive outdated narratives. The Agency warned that it will no longer tolerate defamatory content that undermines the sacrifices of hundreds of dedicated officers who risk their lives daily to maintain law and order across Lagos State.

According to the Taskforce, the deliberate circulation of unverified and misleading stories is a targeted agenda designed to create public distrust. In the context of urban security, eroding public confidence in enforcement agencies severely compromises their ability to manage traffic, enforce environmental laws, and suppress crime.

“The deliberate circulation of stale and misleading stories clearly reveals a malicious agenda targeted at discrediting the Agency and creating unnecessary public distrust,” the statement noted. “It is unfortunate that some online platforms now operate without recourse to fairness, balance and professional ethics expected of responsible journalism.”

The Agency decried the growing trend of traffic-driven blogging where allegations are presented as facts without verification, warning that such misinformation is capable of inciting public hostility against law enforcement agents on duty.

Defending its current operational integrity, the Taskforce emphasised that major institutional reforms, stricter monitoring mechanisms, and personnel retraining exercises have completely transformed the organisation. Under the current administration, emphasis has been placed on strict operational accountability, where erring officers found culpable of misconduct are routinely investigated and sanctioned under public service regulations.

Furthermore, the agency has integrated continuous ethical orientation programmes to ensure enforcement activities align with global best practices, prioritising respect for civil rights and improved public engagement to safeguard its security operations.

Moving forward, the Taskforce announced a zero-tolerance policy toward weaponised digital media campaigns. The Agency’s legal department has been formally directed to monitor online publications and initiate legal action against individuals or organisations spreading malicious propaganda.

“The era where faceless bloggers and unprofessional platforms publish damaging falsehoods without consequences is gradually coming to an end,” the statement added. “The Agency will henceforth explore every legitimate legal avenue to protect its reputation and the integrity of its officers against malicious attacks.”

While reaffirming its commitment to lawful enforcement and supporting the Lagos State Government’s security vision, the Taskforce urged residents to disregard the misleading reports. It appealed to the media to prioritise balanced reporting over sensationalism to avoid undermining public confidence in essential security operations.
