LASTMA Condemns Brutal Attack on Officer at Ojota Interchange

-

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has strongly condemned a violent assault on one of its officers by a commercial bus driver at the Ojota Interchange over the weekend.
According to the agency, the incident involved a painted Caravelle GL Volkswagen bus with registration number EKY 693 YK.

The vehicle was intercepted for violating traffic regulations after operating along the Ojota–Ketu corridor with its passenger door left dangerously ajar while fully loaded with commuters.
Upon being flagged down, the driver reportedly resisted arrest and attempted to escape by dangerously mounting the median. His escape was cut short when the bus broke down, after which he allegedly attacked enforcement officers.

In a shocking escalation, the driver wielded a broken bottle and stabbed one officer in the fingers of his right hand, causing severe fractures and heavy bleeding. The officer was rushed to a medical facility where emergency surgery was performed, including reconstructive procedures on two fingers.

He remains under close medical observation. The offending vehicle was immediately impounded, while the suspect fled the scene. LASTMA confirmed that the matter is under police investigation and that efforts are ongoing to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrator.

General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed outrage at the attack, describing it as a direct affront to lawful authority and civil order. He warned commercial transport operators against reckless disregard for traffic laws, stressing that the agency will intensify enforcement to safeguard public safety.

“The Authority remains steadfast in its mandate to entrench orderliness, discipline, and the seamless flow of traffic across Lagos State. Acts of lawlessness and violent resistance will attract a firm and uncompromising lawful response,” Bakare-Oki stated.
