Troops of the Nigerian Army have apprehended a suspected gunrunner during an intelligence-led operation in Taraba State, reinforcing ongoing efforts to curb illegal arms proliferation and insecurity in the region.
The arrest was carried out on February 12, 2026, in Ibi Local Government Area by troops of the 6 Brigade and Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke, following credible intelligence reports. Soldiers deployed at the Forward Operating Base in Wukari acted swiftly, leading to the arrest of 48-year-old Abubakar Ibrahim, said to be a native of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area in Plateau State.
A search conducted during the operation led to the recovery of six PKT machine guns, two rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and a Peugeot 504 vehicle. Troops also recovered a cash sum of ₦170,000, a Q Seven mobile phone, seven bottles and wraps of perfume, and two small containers of Vaseline.
Military authorities confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and undergoing further investigation.
The Commander of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, Chukwuemeka Micheal Akaliro, commended the troops for their vigilance, professionalism, and rapid response during the operation. He urged personnel to sustain the operational momentum in line with directives from the Chief of Army Staff.
Akaliro also praised local residents for providing credible intelligence that aided the success of the operation, urging members of the public to remain security conscious and continue supporting security agencies with useful information.
He reaffirmed the Brigade’s commitment to protecting lives and property while working to restore peace and stability across Taraba State.
