Four men would have been lynched by an irate mob in the Surulere area of Lagos State, but for the quick intervention of policemen.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Benjamin Hundeyin, said that policemen rescued the four men from Surulere Police Division.
He said that the men were caught shoplifting at a supermarket in Surulere and a mob attempted to lynch them. The suspects are: Babatunde Ogunsami,48, Oludare Olusegun,49, Sunday Ebifuga, 41 and Olatunde Ayinde,50.
Hundeyin said: “The suspects were rescued and thereafter arrested following the swift deployment of officers after receipt of a distress call from members of the community about the mob action. Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects were once captured on CCTV on the 1st of September, 2022 shoplifting six bottles of Martell Blue Swift Cognac from the same supermarket. One of the suspects, Sunday, had been previously charged to court in 2021 for shoplifting. The suspects would be arranged at the conclusion of the investigation. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Abiodun Alabi, has sent a note warning to public members to desist from jungle justice as it is a crime in itself.”
