In a strategic effort to boost the operational capacity of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has led a Programme Management Review meeting with senior United States Government officials and representatives of Messrs Bell Textron in San Diego, California, United States.
The high-level engagement focused on accelerating the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters, a move aimed at strengthening the NAF’s ability to build a more professional, capable, and mission-ready force in line with Nigeria’s national security objectives.
A statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said Air Marshal Aneke expressed appreciation to the United States Government and Messrs Bell Textron for their sustained cooperation, professionalism, and transparency in the execution of the helicopter acquisition programme.
According to the statement, the Air Chief described the planned acquisition as more than a mere upgrade of platforms, noting that it symbolises the enduring defence cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.
“Air Marshal Aneke reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s sense of urgency and commitment to the programme, assuring the US team that his administration would take all necessary measures to ensure the helicopters are delivered in the shortest possible time,” the statement said.
The CAS also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support to the Nigerian Air Force, particularly in the area of platform acquisition and force modernisation.
Air Marshal Aneke further reassured Nigerians of the NAF’s steadfast commitment to eliminating terrorist and criminal threats across the country. He emphasised that NAF operations would continue to be conducted with professionalism, restraint, and accountability, while sustaining public trust and confidence in the Service.
The acquisition of the AH-1Z attack helicopters is expected to significantly enhance Nigeria’s air combat and close air support capabilities in ongoing counterterrorism and internal security operations.
