In a significant development aimed at fostering collaboration and promoting public trust, the Nigeria Police Force has announced a temporary suspension of the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991.
This decision follows a high-level meeting between the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, and a delegation from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) led by its President, Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN.
The meeting, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, focused on concerns surrounding the enforcement of the tinted glass regulation. Both parties engaged in robust deliberations, emphasising the importance of synergy between law enforcement and the legal profession in upholding the rule of law and reinforcing public confidence.
Although the Police noted that no court order currently prohibits the enforcement of the Act, the Force has opted to suspend its implementation temporarily. This gesture, made in consideration of public interest and in deference to the NBA, will remain in effect pending the outcome of a Motion on Notice scheduled for hearing on October 16, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State.
To further institutionalise cooperation, a joint Police-NBA committee has been inaugurated. The committee is expected to serve as a platform for continuous dialogue and collaboration between the two bodies.
Meanwhile, vehicle owners and motorists are encouraged to use this period to regularise their documentation and ensure compliance with all laws governing the use of tinted or shaded vehicle glass in Nigeria.
IGP Egbetokun reaffirmed the Police Force’s commitment to enforcing existing laws with fairness, transparency, and respect for citizens’ rights, while maintaining strong partnerships with key stakeholders in the justice system.
