The Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, has ordered an investigation into allegations of misconduct by some of its personnel following a complaint by the Southwest Zone D of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Army Public Relations Officer, Major Yahaya Ibrahim, said the Commandant of the Depot had taken note of the allegations and reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to protecting all citizens, particularly young people.
He stressed that any conduct by military personnel that falls short of the Army’s professional standards is unacceptable.
“The Nigerian Army exists to protect all citizens, especially the youth, who are the future of the nation. No student or law-abiding citizen should ever feel unsafe or be subjected to harassment, intimidation or assault by those entrusted with the security of lives and property,” the statement said.
According to the statement, the Commandant has directed a full investigation to establish the facts surrounding the allegations and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice in line with military regulations.
The Army also called on the NANS Southwest Zone D Coordinator, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, to provide all available evidence and witness statements to support the investigation.
Major Ibrahim said the alleged actions do not reflect the values, training or character expected of personnel at the Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, assuring that anyone found guilty would face the full weight of military law.
He added that the Commandant is willing to meet with the NANS leadership at the earliest opportunity to discuss the matter and agree on the way forward.
