The Network on Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN), in collaboration with the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) of the Lagos State Police Command and the National Human Rights Commission(NHRC), hosted an impactful community sensitisation event at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, University of Lagos, Akoka, on Sunday, November 10, 2024.
According to the Programme Officer, NOPRIN Foundation, Ms Precious Osinaku, the engagement was done with the support of the Action Group on Free Civic Space with the support of the Fund for Global Human Rights.
Osinaku said: “The engagement aimed to raise public awareness about the Complaint Response Unit of the Lagos State Police Command, educate citizens on the role of the Complaint Response Unit (CRU), and encourage active community participation in improving police accountability and service delivery.”
Osinaku, who delivered the keynote address at the event emphasised the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainable police reforms.
She underscored the need for transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in policing, particularly in Lagos State, which faces unique challenges due to its dynamic urban landscape.
The CRU team, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police, Idris Mogaji, provided insightful presentations on its mandate, operational mechanisms, and success stories.
The unit reiterated its commitment to addressing complaints promptly and fairly, fostering trust between the police and the public.
Church members actively participated in the interactive session, raising concerns about issues such as police misconduct, delayed responses to emergencies, and community safety.
In response, the CRU assured the community of its readiness to address these challenges while emphasizing the importance of reporting cases through its official channels.
The Parish Priest Of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Reverend Father Paul Mayowa Akin-Otiko, commended the initiative, noting that police-community engagements are crucial for fostering trust and building peaceful societies. He encouraged parishioners to remain vigilant, informed, and cooperative in supporting police reforms.
Osinaku further stated: “This collaboration between NOPRIN, the CRU, NHRC, and faith-based organizations highlights the critical role of community stakeholders in shaping a more accountable and effective police force. NOPRIN remains committed to bridging gaps, amplifying citizen voices, and promoting justice and security across Nigeria.”
