The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a notorious ex-convict, identified as 28-year-old John Samuel, for armed robbery and attempted murder just one month after his release from prison.
The suspect, whom the police described as also a professional assassin, was apprehended in his hideout in Epe on Friday, September 19, 2025.
According to a statement from the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi B. Oluseyi, Samuel is linked to a violent robbery that occurred in broad daylight on August 18, 2025.
On that day, he allegedly shot and wounded a businessman, Gbenga Obama, on Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, Ikeja, before stealing his expensive gold necklace and other valuables.
John Samuel, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, had recently completed a six-year jail term for armed robbery.
Police further described him as a “vicious and notorious” criminal known for shooting his victims before robbing them.
CCTV footage from the August attack clearly captured the suspect firing an English pistol at Mr Obama before making off with the jewellery.
His accomplice was waiting on a motorcycle to facilitate their escape. The victim sustained serious gunshot wounds but has since been treated and discharged from the hospital.
Following his arrest, Samuel confessed to the crime, admitting he sold the stolen gold necklace for ₦4 million, a fraction of its actual worth.
The Commissioner of Police for Lagos State, CP Olohudare Jimoh, commended the officers for their “gallantry and commitment” in tracking down and arresting the dangerous suspect.
He assured the public that a discreet investigation is ongoing to apprehend other members of Samuel’s gang.
The Command reiterated its commitment to the safety of all residents, urging them to continue their lawful activities without fear.
“The Command warns all criminally minded persons… that Lagos has no hiding place for them,” the statement concluded. The suspects will be prosecuted upon the completion of the investigation.
