Nurses Forum Condemns Alleged Harassment of Ogun Nurse, Demands Investigation

-

The Elegant Nurses Forum (ENF) has condemned the alleged assault, intimidation and harassment of a registered nurse employed by the Ogun State Hospitals Management Board and posted to the Judiciary Clinic in Ilaro, Ogun State.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Nurse Thomas Abiodun Olamide, the forum alleged that Nurse Adesina Oluwatosin O., who serves as the Nurse-in-Charge of the Judiciary Clinic, had been subjected to a hostile work environment after raising concerns about the facility’s sanitary conditions and healthcare standards.

According to the forum, the nurse repeatedly reported poor hygiene conditions at the clinic and the absence of adequate cleaning arrangements. ENF claimed that instead of addressing the concerns, authorities subjected her to verbal attacks, insults and pressure to undertake cleaning duties, which it argued fall outside the professional responsibilities of nurses.

“Nursing is a noble profession governed by ethical principles, professional standards and established regulations. Nurses are trained to provide evidence-based healthcare services, not to serve as cleaners or janitors,” the statement said.

The forum further alleged that after formally reporting the challenges through appropriate channels, the nurse received a query from the judiciary authorities. ENF stated that the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) advised her not to respond, arguing that she is employed by the Ogun State Hospitals Management Board rather than the judiciary.

The group described the situation as an apparent campaign of intimidation against a healthcare professional who sought improvements in workplace conditions and service delivery.

ENF also alleged that nursing leaders who visited the clinic to assess the situation and engage management were met with hostility by the Assistant Chief Registrar. According to the forum, the visiting officials described the work environment as toxic and unsuitable for effective healthcare delivery.

The forum further claimed that the dispute escalated when the Assistant Chief Registrar, identified as Mr Omololu Davies, allegedly verbally assaulted the nurse, dragged her out of the clinic, locked the facility and ordered her to leave the court premises.

“Such conduct against a healthcare worker is unacceptable, unlawful and a direct attack on the dignity of the nursing profession,” the statement said.

The group called on the Ogun State Government to intervene and investigate the allegations, which it said reflect a broader pattern of disrespect and intimidation of nurses in public institutions.

Among its demands, ENF called for a transparent investigation into the alleged harassment and victimisation of the nurse, a public apology from the Ogun State Ministry of Justice and the Office of the Attorney-General, and the withdrawal of any measures it believes are intended to punish the nurse for demanding professional standards and a safe working environment.

The forum also urged NANNM to consider legal action to protect the rights and professional integrity of the affected nurse, while calling on civil society groups, labour unions and human rights organisations to support healthcare workers facing workplace abuse.

“We wish to remind all public institutions that healthcare workers deserve respect, protection and cooperation. A society that humiliates its nurses is a society that undermines its own healthcare system,” the statement added.

The allegations had not been independently verified as of the time of filing this report, and there was no immediate response from the Ogun State Judiciary or the officials named in the statement. #Securitynewsalert.com
