Ogun Police Nabs 89 Motorists Over Number Plate Violations, Foils Robberies

…Recover Stolen Vehicles

The Ogun State Police Command says it has apprehended 89 motorists for violating regulations on vehicle registration plates, while also foiling armed robbery operations, recovering stolen vehicles and motorcycles, and arresting robbery suspects in separate operations across the state.

The command said the achievements were recorded through intelligence-led operations and preventive policing initiatives carried out in line with the nationwide directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, targeting vehicles operating without registration plates or with covered, altered, or obscured number plates.

According to the police, the operations also led to the recovery of one stolen vehicle, two stolen motorcycles and other exhibits linked to ongoing investigations.

“The operational successes underscore the Command’s unwavering commitment to proactive and intelligence-driven policing aimed at preventing crime, enhancing public safety, strengthening public confidence, and denying criminal elements the opportunity to operate anywhere within Ogun State,” the command said in a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.

The police disclosed that the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders to intensify enforcement of the IGP’s directive against vehicles operating without proper registration plates.

“As a result of coordinated enforcement operations conducted simultaneously across the state, 89 vehicles and their drivers were intercepted for operating in violation of the law,” the statement said.

The command added that administrative and legal actions had been initiated against the offenders, including prosecution where applicable.

It explained that the exercise was designed to improve vehicle traceability, strengthen intelligence gathering, facilitate prompt investigations and prevent criminals from exploiting unregistered or obscured vehicles to evade detection.

The police warned that the enforcement exercise would continue across Ogun State and that violators would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

In one of the operations, operatives of the Ogere Division, working with the Ogun State So-Safe Corps, local vigilantes and community members, foiled an armed robbery attack at Akuro Phase I, Ogere Remo, on July 3.

According to the command, armed robbers had invaded a residence and dispossessed occupants of two motorcycles, mobile phones, cash and other valuables before attempting to escape.

The police said a coordinated tactical response forced the suspects to abandon the two stolen motorcycles and flee into a nearby bush.

“Subsequent coordinated efforts led to the arrest of one suspect, Abdulsalam Adam, who is currently assisting investigators with useful information,” the statement said.

Investigators also recovered a knife, an expended cartridge and a broken padlock from the scene as exhibits.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, for further investigation, while efforts are ongoing to arrest other members of the fleeing gang.

In another breakthrough, operatives of the Ajuwon Division responded to a distress call on July 2 reporting an armed robbery at Baale Akinosi Area in Ajuwon, where hoodlums allegedly invaded a residence and carted away mobile phones, jewellery, power banks, a laptop computer, a Toyota Camry and other valuables.

The command said the division’s Anti-Crime Team immediately launched a coordinated operation.

“On sighting the Police, the fleeing hoodlums abandoned the stolen vehicle during a hot pursuit and escaped,” the statement said.

Police arrested one suspect, identified as Israel Salako, who is assisting investigators, while efforts are continuing to apprehend other members of the gang and recover the remaining stolen property.

Commending officers involved in the successful operations, Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni praised their professionalism, vigilance and prompt response to distress calls.

“The Command remains committed to proactive, intelligence-led policing through sustained visibility patrols, strategic stop-and-search operations, prompt response to distress calls, community partnership, and intelligence gathering aimed at preventing crime before it occurs,” the commissioner said.

He urged motorists to comply with vehicle registration requirements and advised residents to remain security conscious by boarding commercial vehicles only at designated motor parks and recognised loading points.

The police commissioner also cautioned members of the public against patronising unbranded vehicles or private vehicles operating illegally as commercial transport, advising travellers to share their vehicle details and travel information with trusted relatives or friends whenever practicable.

Ojajuni further appealed to residents to support the police with timely and credible information capable of preventing crime and aiding operational responses.

“We will continue to sustain robust preventive policing strategies and maintain relentless pressure on criminal elements to ensure the safety and security of all residents of Ogun State,” he assured.

The enforcement campaign follows the nationwide directive by the Inspector-General of Police aimed at strengthening security through stricter enforcement of vehicle registration laws. Police authorities have repeatedly argued that properly registered vehicles enhance intelligence gathering, improve crime investigations and make it more difficult for criminals to operate anonymously.

The Ogun State Command says it will sustain the enforcement exercise alongside intelligence-driven operations, visibility patrols and community policing initiatives as part of efforts to combat violent crime and improve public safety across the state. #Securitynewsalert.com
