One Dead, Six Injured in Gbagada Expressway Accident

-

A fatal road accident claimed the life of a female passenger and left six others with severe injuries over the weekend, following a collision on the Oworonsoki-Apapa Expressway near the New Castle Bus Stop.

The incident occurred when a Volkswagen commercial bus (LSD 654 XY) veered off the road and violently struck a roadside culvert. The force of the impact ejected a female passenger onto the expressway, where she was tragically struck by an oncoming articulated trailer. The driver of the trailer reportedly fled the scene immediately following the collision.

The remaining six occupants of the commercial bus, including the driver, sustained multiple fractures and serious injuries.

Operatives from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) stationed in the Gbagada axis arrived promptly, implementing emergency traffic protocols to secure the scene and prevent secondary accidents. The expressway was temporarily cordoned off to facilitate a coordinated rescue operation.

The Pedro Police Division provided security support while personnel from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) evacuated the injured passengers to a nearby medical facility for urgent care. The remains of the deceased were respectfully removed from the scene by the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU).

Following the successful evacuation, LASTMA officials cleared the wreckage and debris, restoring normal traffic flow to the major expressway.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the six injured victims a swift recovery.

In his statement, Bakare-Oki urged commercial transport operators and private vehicle owners to prioritise vehicle maintenance. He emphasised that ensuring vehicles are in optimal condition, particularly the braking systems, is a critical, non-negotiable responsibility.

“Strict adherence to routine vehicle maintenance remains an indispensable safeguard against preventable road traffic accidents and a critical measure for the preservation of human lives on our highways,” Bakare-Oki stated.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its public enlightenment campaigns to promote road safety awareness throughout Lagos State. #Securitynewsalert.com
