A joint task force of security operatives successfully neutralised a suspected kidnapper and rescued an abducted man during a high-stakes tactical operation in the Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State on Thursday.
The rescue mission was triggered in the early hours of January 29, 2026, following reports that armed men had snatched a male victim from the Ezimo-Uno community. In a swift response, Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, ordered an immediate mobilisation of a diverse security team.
The coalition included personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, Forest Guards, the Neighbourhood Watch Group, and local vigilantes.
The team tracked the criminal elements to the dense forest regions of Agu-Shere and Okpakereke. Upon spotting the operatives, the kidnappers opened fire, leading to a fierce gun battle. Utilising superior tactical precision, the security forces neutralised one suspect on the spot.
The remaining members of the gang managed to escape into the thick forests bordering Benue State, though authorities believe many fled with significant gunshot wounds.
The kidnapped victim was rescued unharmed during the exchange. Following a sweep of the suspects’ camp, police recovered a formidable cache of items, including an AK-47 rifle loaded with 20 rounds of live ammunition, an extra magazine, and two daggers.
Other items seized from the scene included military camouflage uniforms, mobile phones, assorted food supplies, cooking utensils, and a freshly slaughtered chicken.
Commissioner Giwa praised the synergy between the various security arms and reaffirmed the command’s dedication to eradicating violent crime within the state.
He issued a stern call to the public, specifically advising medical professionals and healthcare providers to immediately alert the police if anyone seeking treatment for gunshot injuries appears at their facilities.
A manhunt remains active as security forces continue to scour the border regions for the surviving fugitives.
