The Oyo State Police Command has stepped up efforts to safeguard peace ahead of the 2027 general elections, convening a high-level stakeholder meeting with political party leaders to address rising concerns over political violence.
At the engagement, the Commissioner of Police stressed that political disagreements must never be allowed to disrupt public order or undermine the state’s security gains. He urged parties to embrace peaceful participation, mutual respect, and strict adherence to the law.
Representatives of political parties commended the Command’s proactive approach, describing the dialogue as a vital step in curbing political unrest. They called for a thorough investigation into the violent clash at Agbaje Market, insisting that anyone found culpable must face prosecution.
In a related development, the women’s caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Dr. Adekemi Opatunde, visited the Police Headquarters to express appreciation for the Command’s swift response. The delegation pledged full cooperation with security agencies to ensure peaceful campaigns.
Responding, the Commissioner assured both the delegation and the public that the Agbaje Market incident will be investigated without bias. He emphasised that professionalism, fairness, and respect for the rule of law would guide the process, with arrests and prosecutions to follow where necessary.
The Command further appealed to political leaders and supporters to avoid inflammatory rhetoric, notify police of planned gatherings, and prioritise peace over ambition. “Political ambition must not be pursued at the expense of human lives and public order,” the Commissioner warned.
The Oyo State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to impartiality, professionalism, and the protection of lives and property, urging all stakeholders to make peaceful political participation a collective responsibility.
