According to the statement, Awu is an experienced police officer with a background in public complaints management, criminal investigation, supervision, leadership and international peacekeeping.
He was among the pioneer members of the CRU and rose through various responsibilities within the unit to become its Second-in-Command before he was appointed substantive head.
His experience in the unit covers complaint handling, call-centre operations, supervision, citizen engagement and institutional accountability.
The statement noted that Awu holds a Higher National Diploma from the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa; a Postgraduate Diploma in Crime Management and a master’s degree in Criminal Justice System from Kaduna State University.
He also holds a master’s degree in Security and Strategic Studies from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.
In addition, he graduated from Advanced Detective Course 67 at the Police Staff College, Jos, and has undergone training in human rights and professional policing.
Awu also served as Deputy Contingent Commander of Formed Police Unit Contingent 11 in Mogadishu, Somalia, between 2022 and 2023, an assignment that broadened his leadership and operational experience in multinational policing.
The IGP charged the new CRU head to uphold professionalism, ensure prompt responses to public complaints and respect human rights in the discharge of his duties.
He also urged him to promote effective engagement with members of the public and ensure that complaints against police personnel are handled transparently and in line with established procedures.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to strengthening internal accountability mechanisms, addressing public concerns and promoting professional, rights-respecting and people-centred policing.
