Police Arrest Popular Content Creator Over Alleged Rape, Death of Young Woman

-

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a well-known social media personality, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly called Odogwu of Asaba”, over the alleged rape of a 20-year-old woman who later died by suicide.

According to police reports, the incident began on June 1, 2026, when the victim travelled to Asaba at the invitation of Ogbonna, 40, who had promised to mentor her in content creation. Upon arrival, she was allegedly taken to a hotel where Ogbonna reportedly raped her and subjected her to physical assault.

The victim returned home visibly traumatised and confided in her parents. She later recorded a video detailing her ordeal and the emotional distress she suffered. Tragically, she ingested a toxic substance in what police described as a suicide attempt. Despite efforts to save her, she died.

Following a petition from the victim’s family, Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, directed the Area Command Effurun to launch a full investigation. Police operatives swiftly arrested Ogbonna, who has since made “useful statements” during preliminary interrogation. Authorities say further investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.

In a statement, CP Oyeniyi assured the public and the victim’s family that the case will be handled with utmost professionalism and that justice will be pursued. “No aspect of the allegations will be overlooked. Appropriate legal action will be taken in accordance with the law,” he said.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest and reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting women and ensuring accountability in cases of sexual violence.
