The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has directed Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), patrol and guard officers, vigilante groups, forest guards and other recognised civil security outfits to intensify intelligence gathering and sustained patrols across forests, rural communities and critical access routes in the state.
The directive was issued during a strategic security meeting held on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, with patrol and guard officers from all police divisions, leaders of vigilante groups, forest guards and other recognised civil security outfits. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and other members of the Command Management Team.
In a statement issued by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the Commissioner of Police ordered enhanced surveillance of roads, waterways, railway corridors and bush paths to strengthen security and curb criminal activities across the state.
According to Edafe, the police commissioner commended the various security outfits for their contributions to maintaining peace and security but stressed that their operations must be carried out strictly within the confines of the law and in coordination with the Nigeria Police Force.
He said the CP directed that the activities of the local security outfits be coordinated through the respective DPOs, noting that effective community policing depends on strong collaboration, sustained patrols and timely intelligence sharing.
Edafe further stated that the police commissioner warned against unlawful detention, torture, dehumanising treatment and the use of vigilante groups or other security outfits to settle personal disputes. He directed that all suspects arrested by such groups must be promptly handed over to the nearest police station for investigation and possible prosecution.
The statement added that CP Oyeniyi urged leaders of the security outfits to ensure discipline among their members, identify and remove criminal or errant elements within their ranks, and refrain from shielding anyone found to have acted outside the law.
He reaffirmed the Delta State Police Command’s commitment to working with genuine security partners within the framework of the law, adding that similar security engagements would be replicated across the state’s local government areas to strengthen coordination, intelligence sharing and grassroots security.
