The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 20-year-old man, Garuba Aminu, for unlawful possession of an item suspected to be a human body part in Oyo town.
Securitynewsalert.com noticed that in a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the police said the suspect was apprehended on February 20, 2026, around 8:00 a.m., after residents of the Commercial Oroki area became suspicious of his behaviour.
According to the police, the suspect allegedly disguised himself as a scavenger and was observed moving around the area in a manner that raised concern among vigilant community members.
“The suspect, who disguised as a scavenger at the Commercial Oroki area of Oyo, was strongly suspected by vigilant members of the community due to his strange movements and conduct,” the command said.
Police said residents decided to search him, during which a cut on the lower right leg, suspected to be a human part, was discovered inside a large sack containing waste plastic bottles he was carrying.
“Acting promptly and responsibly, concerned residents subjected him to a search, during which a cut lower right leg suspected to be a human part was discovered inside a large sack containing waste plastic bottles in his possession,” the statement added.
The command said a joint police patrol team, working with other security agencies, quickly responded to the report and arrived at the scene where an angry crowd had gathered and was attempting to lynch the suspect.
“Upon receipt of the report, a Police joint patrol team, in collaboration with other security partners, swiftly rushed to the scene where an angry mob had gathered with intent to lynch the suspect,” the police stated. “The team professionally dispersed the mob and rescued him from imminent harm, while the suspected human part was recovered as an exhibit and secured for forensic and investigative purposes.”
The police said the suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
“The suspect has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet and thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement noted.
The command also commended residents for their vigilance and urged the public to continue supporting law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities.
“This underscores the importance of community participation in crime prevention and control,” the police said.
However, the command cautioned members of the public against mob action.
“Members of the public are strongly cautioned against taking laws into their hands or engaging in mob action, as such acts are unlawful and capable of obstructing justice,” the statement warned.
