Operatives of the Benue State Police Command have successfully secured the release of worshippers abducted during a night vigil in Ado Local Government Area, arresting four suspected kidnappers and recovering arms and ammunition in coordinated security operations.
The victims were kidnapped during a night vigil at St. John Catholic Church, Ojeji, prompting swift action by security agencies. Police authorities confirmed that the victims were later released unhurt following sustained search-and-rescue operations across the Ado axis and neighbouring communities.
Police operatives from the Ado Division, acting on credible intelligence, arrested two suspects identified as Abubakar Jibril and Ashiru Ibrahim on February 11, 2026. The suspects were reportedly found in possession of five rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
Following established investigative procedures, the suspects were transferred to the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team for further investigation. Acting on follow-up intelligence, operatives of the IRT, alongside tactical teams of the state police command, conducted a raid on Ibrahim’s hideout on February 14, 2026. The operation resulted in the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and eight rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, while two additional suspects believed to be key members of the kidnapping syndicate were apprehended.
Preliminary investigations have linked the arrested suspects directly to the church abduction. Security agencies have intensified efforts to track down other fleeing members of the criminal network as investigations continue.
In a further move to strengthen security operations, the Nigeria Police Force, under the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, has deployed its Air Wing for aerial surveillance and reinforced tactical teams in the state. The deployment is aimed at boosting intelligence gathering and restricting criminal activities across Benue.
The police command acknowledged the support received from the Benue State Government, the Catholic Diocese leadership, the Ado Local Government Chairman, and other security agencies, including the Nigerian Army and the Benue Civil Protection Guard. Authorities said the collaboration played a vital role in ensuring the safe rescue of the victims.
Commissioner of Police in the state, Ifeanyi Emenari, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling kidnapping, banditry, cultism, and other violent crimes, assuring residents that security operatives remain fully mobilised to safeguard lives and property.
Police authorities said further updates on the investigation would be communicated as operations continue.
