Police to Resume Enforcement of Tinted Glass Permit January 2, 2026

-

The Nigeria Police Force has announced that it will resume full enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy from January 2, 2026, citing rising security concerns across the country.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the decision followed a careful review of emerging crime trends and the need to enhance public safety, even as the matter remains before the court.

He clarified that at no time did any court restrain the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing existing laws regulating the use of tinted glass on vehicles. However, the Force had earlier suspended enforcement in the interest of transparency and public convenience, to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation and complete the registration process without undue pressure.

Hundeyin noted that recent developments have shown a disturbing increase in criminal activities carried out using vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. According to him, some individuals and organised criminal groups have taken advantage of the enforcement gap to conceal their identities and perpetrate crimes, including armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent offences.

“In view of this development, the Nigeria Police Force has found it both necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement as a proactive measure to safeguard our communities,” he said.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, assured Nigerians that the renewed enforcement would be conducted with professionalism, respect for citizens’ rights and strict adherence to extant laws. He reiterated the Force’s commitment to public safety, the rule of law and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure national security.

The Police urged motorists who require a Tinted Glass Permit to apply through approved channels and ensure that their vehicles comply with legal requirements.

The announcement was issued from Force Headquarters, Abuja, on December 15, 2025.
