Police Uncover Alleged Use of Restricted Veterinary Sedative in Killing of Anambra Community Leader

-

The Nigeria Police Force says it has made a breakthrough in the investigation into the killing of Emmanuel Nwanneniya, a former chairman and land agent of Ikem Nando Community in Anambra State, with five suspects now in custody.

The arrests, carried out by the Force Intelligence Department’s Special Tactical Squad (STS), followed a direct order from Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu. Investigators say the suspects allegedly used a restricted veterinary sedative — identified as S.P.L. Ketamine Hydrochloride 500mg/10ml in the commission of the crime, and that the killing was tied to a long-running land dispute within the community.

According to police, the crisis traces back to disagreements over how to manage proceeds from the sale of community land. The funds were divided among the community’s three clans, with one clan receiving roughly N39 million. Community members reportedly voted to invest the money in a community hall and other development projects. Still, opposition from a rival faction triggered months of hostility, threats and intimidation against those who backed the plan.

Investigators say several respected community members were targeted, including reports of kidnapping threats against elders and leaders who supported the development plan. Some suspects were questioned and released earlier in the investigation, but police say the hostility only intensified, culminating in Nwanneniya’s murder.

Police allege the suspects lured Nwanneniya to a meeting under the pretext of discussing a land sale. Believing he was meeting genuine buyers, he went to the agreed location, where he was allegedly overpowered at gunpoint, restrained, and injected multiple times with the sedative. The suspects then allegedly forced him to hand over access to his phone and banking applications.

Nwanneniya’s wife gave investigators one of the first breaks in the case. She told police her husband had left home to inspect land with prospective buyers. When he didn’t return and stopped answering calls, she drove to the meeting point and found him lying motionless on the ground. Her statement, combined with digital evidence and intelligence analysis, helped investigators identify the suspects.

At a parade in Abuja, community members described months of threats leading up to the killing. Chief Ejimofor said he had repeatedly been threatened with kidnapping over his support for the development plan, and that the threats had been reported to police before Nwanneniya was killed.

Community Youth Leader Ikechukwu Onagor also spoke to journalists, saying his own brother had died in circumstances he believes are linked to the same land dispute. He called on police to investigate whether the two deaths are connected. Police say that case remains a separate, active investigation with no conclusions reached.

STS Coordinator ACP Victor Ogbeide Godfrey called the operation a success for intelligence-led policing and credited the IG’s operational support for enabling the arrests. He also raised concern over how easily the restricted sedative was obtained, urging NAFDAC and other regulatory agencies to tighten oversight of controlled substances.

The Nigeria Police Force said investigations are ongoing and that everyone connected to the alleged conspiracy will be identified and prosecuted, while noting that all suspects remain presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.#Securitynewsalert.com
