The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (rtd), has emphasised the vital role of data protection in modern law enforcement during the National Data Privacy Summit 2026, held at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.
The summit, themed “Privacy in the Era of Emerging Technologies: Trust, Ethics and Innovation,” was organised by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).
In his keynote address, Chairman Argungu commended the NDPC and its National Commissioner, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, for their groundbreaking efforts in advancing data privacy nationwide. He noted that data has become central to crime prevention and policing, marking a shift from traditional reliance on physical methods.
Argungu pledged the PSC’s commitment to strict compliance with NDPC policies, particularly in the ongoing recruitment of 50,000 Police Constables. “The PSC is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of data privacy across all our operations,” he stated. He also reaffirmed the Commission’s sustained partnership with the NDPC.
The PSC continues to integrate ethical data management practices into its mandate to strengthen public trust and enhance policing efficiency.
The Police Service Commission, established under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended) and the PSC Establishment Act of 2001, is empowered to appoint, promote, and exercise disciplinary control over all police officers except the Inspector-General of Police.
