PSC Promotes AIG Fayoade to Deputy Inspector General of Police

-

The Police Service Commission has approved the promotion of Assistant Inspector General of Police, Fayoade Adegoke Mustapha, to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).

The commission announced the promotion in a statement issued on Friday, February 20, 2026, made available to Securitynewsalert.com, noting that the decision followed his performance in the commission’s written examination and oral interview.

Fayoade, who joined the police in 1992, has over three decades of service in the force. Prior to his elevation, he served as the Assistant Inspector General in charge of Zone 2 Command, Lagos, where he was credited with advancing community policing initiatives and coordinating strategic operations, including the dismantling of the “Billionaires” kidnapping gang operating in Lagos.

According to the commission, the new DIG has received several national and international recognitions during his career. Among them are the 2024 Crime Buster of the Year for West and Central Africa, awards for Best Police Station in Africa presented in Nairobi, Kenya, and Best Divisional Police Officer in West Africa recognised in Johannesburg and Dubai. He also received the International Security Award from ISSO-SEC Switzerland and HSIIS United Kingdom.

The Chairman of the commission, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (retd.), described the promotion as a call to greater responsibility and expressed confidence in Fayoade’s capacity to contribute to national security. Argungu said the officer’s experience in technology-driven policing and stakeholder collaboration would help strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.

The Police Service Commission, headquartered in Abuja, is the statutory oversight body of the Nigeria Police Force. It is responsible for the appointment, promotion and discipline of police officers, excluding the Inspector-General of Police, as well as the formulation of policies aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the force.
