Fresh facts have emerged on how soldiers from 174 Battalion Odugunyan in Ikorodu set Ogijo Police Station, Ogun State, on fire over mistaken identity.
It was gathered that the soldiers, who were on a reprisal mission, following the murder of their colleague, attacked and set the police station on Wednesday 15th February 2023, thinking that the deceased was killed by a policeman attached to Ogijo Police Station.
It was after the dust raised by the murder and attack on the station settled that the soldiers realized too late that the suspected killer of the soldier was not a policeman as believed, but a Legionnaire, who was wearing clothes that looked like a mobile police uniform.
A police source said: “ The man that killed the soldier is not a policeman. He is a legion, dressed in their uniform, so the soldiers thought he was a mobile police officer. The legion wanted to collect money from a cyclist who was carrying the soldier. The soldier was on mufti and refused the legion to collect money from the cyclist, and that was how the trouble started. The soldier thought the legion was a mobile policeman because of what he wore. They started arguing, which snowballed into fighting. The legion man brought out a jack knife and stabbed the soldier.”
Angry soldiers, who came to avenge the death of their colleague, without carrying proper investigation, made a beeline for Ogijo Police Station and set the place on fire.
