Suspects Arrested After Troops Respond to Security Breaches in Benue

-

Troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation WHIRL STROKE have successfully intervened in two separate security incidents in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, resulting in the rescue of an injured herder and the arrest of suspected cattle rustlers.

Securitynewsalert.com heard that the operations, which took place on February 15, 2026, highlight the ongoing efforts to curb communal violence and livestock theft in the region.

Following a distress call regarding an attack on herders at Amua Village, troops stationed at Umenger mobilised to the scene. Upon arrival, officials confirmed a grim scene: one herder had been killed, and another was suffering from gunshot wounds.

The JTF acted swiftly to stabilise the situation. The wounded survivor was evacuated to Keana, Nasarawa State, for emergency treatment.  The remains of the deceased herder were handed over to community representatives for traditional burial rites.

In a simultaneous development, intelligence provided by local youths led troops at Ukpiam to a suspected cattle rustling ring.

The military apprehended Terngu Aondohemba, 23, who reportedly confessed to killing two cattle belonging to Fulani herders. Aondohemba’s confession led authorities to Korje Village in Daudu, where Mrs Mercy Onban was arrested. She is the wife of the alleged buyer of the stolen meat, which was recovered as evidence.

Security forces are currently trailing two other accomplices, identified as Mr Akpehe and Mr Ashinge, who remain at large.

Major General Moses Gara, Force Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE, condemned the acts of violence and reaffirmed the military’s resolve to protect both lives and property.

“We are committed to halting the incessant killings and cattle rustling within our operational area. Perpetrators will be relentlessly pursued and brought to justice,” Gara stated.

The Commander urged community leaders to bolster their cooperation with the JTF, noting that “timely intelligence sharing” is the most effective weapon in restoring permanent peace to the area.
