In a move to strengthen institutional ties and bolster security, the management of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) has initiated a formal partnership with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The Chief Medical Director of UPTH, Professor Chituru Godwill Orluwene, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate of the EFCC on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. Speaking during the session, Professor Orluwene, who recently assumed leadership of the hospital, emphasised that a friendly relationship between the two organisations is essential for mutual assistance and operational efficiency.
The CMD explained that the hospital’s mandate involves interacting with a broad spectrum of individuals, which occasionally presents unique security and ethical challenges. He noted that the hospital might encounter “errant behaviours” among staff, patients, or clients that necessitate the intervention of sister agencies. According to Orluwene, the visit serves to bridge the gap between healthcare delivery and law enforcement, ensuring that both agencies can rely on one another to maintain order and professionalism.
Responding to the visit, the Acting Director of the Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate, Assistant Commander of the EFCC (ACE1) Hassan Saidu, praised the CMD’s proactive approach. Saidu remarked that such collaboration is vital for national coexistence and reflected a deep understanding of how different sectors must work together in a diverse society like Nigeria.
Saidu further observed that while the medical community ensures the health and well-being of the citizenry, the EFCC remains committed to sanitising the system. He commended the UPTH leadership for recognising the commission’s role in society, adding that collective effort is the only way to ensure the security and stability of the country.
