Viral Video: Cross Rivers Police Clarifies Motor Accident, Exonerates Its Officers

-

The Cross River State Police Command has clarified the incident of a lone serious motor accident which occurred on the 24th of April, 2025, at about 10:45 am along Abakpa/Igoli Road in Ogoja Local Government Area.

The incident involved a BMW vehicle with registration number AKD 900 GD, driven by one Bassey Precious ‘m’, in the company of one Caleb Fidelis Okem ‘m’.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident occurred following an attempt to resist arrest by some armed men suspected to be operatives of a yet to be identified armed group, who were in a white Toyota Hiace Bus.

Regrettably, following the incident, one Joseph Otonko, aged 21 years and a resident of No. 36 Old Court Road, Abakpa in Ogoja LGA, released a defamatory and misleading viral video via the TikTok platform.

The video falsely alleged misconduct and involvement of personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, particularly those of the Ogoja Division, in the said accident.

The content of the video was not only false and inciteful, but also capable of misleading the public and undermining confidence in the Force.

The Command immediately invited Joseph Otonko for interrogation and clarification on his claims. Following a thorough engagement, the said Otonko has since retracted his earlier allegations and has produced a second viral disclaimer video, where he publicly exonerated the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force from any wrongdoing about the motor accident.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olusegun Eyitayo Omosanyin, while appreciating members of the public for their continued cooperation, urges all citizens to remain law-abiding, constructive and responsible in their expressions.

He noted that spreading falsehoods and inciting content against security agencies is not only unlawful but counterproductive to the peace and progress of our society.

The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to transparency, professionalism, and service delivery. Citizens are therefore encouraged to seek proper clarification and engage through legitimate channels before drawing conclusions or making public statements.
