The newly confirmed Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has articulated a clear and aggressive strategy to combat insurgency, vowing to lead a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) that will keep militants “running without time to think or plan.”
AVM Aneke made the resolute pledge on October 29, 2025, during his confirmation before the National Assembly, following his nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The new CAS defined his vision for the NAF as one built on being versatile, disciplined, and “lethal in a professional sense.” He elaborated on the aggressive strategy, stating, “A man running from you will not have the time to plan to hurt you.”
His leadership is anchored on four key pillars: training, technology, safety, and strategic innovation. He emphasised that future military success would hinge on intellect and adaptability, not merely brute force.
“True military power is not measured by brute force but by superior intellect and adaptability,” AVM Aneke stated, affirming his commitment to building a force that “responds swiftly, strikes precisely, and acts intelligently.”
AVM Aneke’s confirmation officially elevates him to the position, where he legally succeeds Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar and joins the Armed Forces Council. The confirmation process adheres to Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act, which mandates National Assembly approval for the President’s appointment of Service Chiefs, reinforcing the principle of civilian oversight and democratic accountability.
Lawmakers offered high praise for AVM Aneke, commending his depth of experience and operational leadership. They specifically lauded his impactful tenure as the Air Officer Commanding, Mobility Command, where he was credited with improving strategic airlift capabilities and strengthening joint operations. His work in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations was highlighted as critical to shaping Nigeria’s counterinsurgency efforts.
AVM Aneke brings a formidable combination of scholarship and operational expertise to the role. A graduate of the United States Air War College, he holds multiple advanced degrees, including Master’s degrees in Strategic Studies, International Affairs and Diplomacy, and Political Economy and Development Studies.
With over 4,300 flight hours across various aircraft types, he stands as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished airpower professionals.
The confirmation session was attended by key dignitaries, including the Honourable Minister of Defence, Dr Mohammed Badaru Abubakar. As he takes command, AVM Aneke’s message signals a new, proactive chapter for the NAF, one defined by precision, professionalism, and progress in securing the nation.
