Woman To Face Attempted Murder Charge After Video Shows Attack On Minor

-

The Abia State Police Command says it is aware of a viral video circulating on social media showing a woman attempting to attack a young girl with a knife and confirms that the suspect has since been arrested as investigations continue.

Preliminary findings indicate that on July 5, 2026, Nwoko Gift attempted to kill her 12-year-old niece, Ebo Chimamanda, at their shared residence at IBB Housing Estate, Umuahia.

The attack is reported to have followed the girl’s refusal to hang out laundry as instructed before Gift left for the market.

Investigators say the suspect had a history of beating the girl and had repeatedly threatened to kill her.

Acting on actionable intelligence, operatives from the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters in Umuahia moved swiftly to the scene, rescued the victim, arrested the suspect, and recovered the knife used in the attack.

The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation, after which the suspect will be charged with attempted murder.

The Command has condemned the act in the strongest terms and is urging members of the public to desist from such conduct and to report similar incidents to the nearest police station.
