The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has responded promptly to a distressing situation involving several Nigerian nationals stranded in the Central African Republic (CAR) after being deceived and forced to work for nearly a year without pay.
The alarm was raised when a viral video circulated online, showing the victims appealing for help, claiming that their passports had been confiscated and they were abandoned by their employer.
According to the video, the individuals endured harsh conditions and were left without support in a foreign land.
Following the release of the footage, NiDCOM, Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, immediately reached out to officials at the Nigerian Embassy in CAR.
The Commission confirmed that contact had been made with the affected Nigerians and that their passports were successfully recovered.
In a decisive move, arrangements are underway to dispatch a bus to transport the victims on what is estimated to be an eight-hour journey to the Nigerian Embassy in Bangui for shelter and assistance.
Officials also disclosed that the agent allegedly responsible for the exploitation has been identified.
NiDCOM has expressed its deep appreciation for the swift and coordinated response by the Nigerian Embassy in CAR, affirming the government’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of its citizens abroad.
This incident has sparked renewed conversations about the safety of migrant workers and the need for robust regulatory mechanisms to prevent human trafficking and labour exploitation.
