A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) attached to Mobile Police Force (Mopol) 12 in Niger State, Isah Abdullahi, popularly known as Kunkuri, has reportedly shot himself dead during an official audit of arms and ammunition, amid allegations linking him to the supply of weapons to bandits.
The incident occurred at the Mopol 12 armoury, located within the B Division Police Command along Paikoro Road, Minna.
According to police sources, a team of detectives from Abuja had arrived at the command to conduct a routine annual audit of arms and ammunition. During the exercise, auditors reportedly discovered that 13 AK-47 rifles and more than 2,000 rounds of ammunition were missing or unaccounted for. The audit had reportedly covered only the AK-47 section before the incident occurred.
DSP Abdullahi, who was the Head of Armoury at Mopol 12, was earlier taken to Abuja alongside other suspects for interrogation. He was later returned to Minna and taken back to the armoury for a physical audit.
Sources said that during the process, the officer allegedly picked up a pistol from the armoury and shot himself in the head, dying instantly. The armoury is said to be electronically controlled, with access reportedly limited to the DSP, which enabled him to reach the weapon.
Meanwhile, an Inspector, John Moses, attached to the Niger State Government House, has been arrested in connection with the case. He reportedly confessed that the late DSP supplied him with arms and ammunition, which were allegedly sold to bandits and hoodlums operating in the Erena community, Shiroro Local Government Area, through his brother.
Operatives of the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) have taken suspects involved in the case to Abuja for further investigation.
In the aftermath of the incident, officers who accompanied the DSP to the armoury have been arrested for alleged negligence and are facing an orderly room trial. Four other police officers linked to the late officer are also under interrogation.
A special NSA team has since been deployed to guard the armoury round the clock, while an autopsy is expected to be conducted to determine the actual cause of death.
Further revelations indicate that the deceased officer reportedly owned multiple houses in choice areas of Minna, as well as several vehicles.
Confirming the incident, the Niger State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Elleman, said the matter was under investigation. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, stated that the incident occurred on December 16, 2025, at about 2:30 p.m., during the arms audit process.
Police authorities said investigations are ongoing.
