Nigerian Army Chief Pledges Enhanced Welfare to Boost Troop Morale in Niger State

-

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to prioritising the well-being of its personnel, citing welfare as a “critical factor” for national security success.

During an official visit to the 18 Brigade at Latini Barracks in Bida on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, General Shaibu addressed troops directly, promising a new wave of support measures designed to improve their operational effectiveness and personal lives.

General Shaibu emphasised that under his leadership, the Army is moving toward a more holistic approach to soldiering. He noted that the welfare of personnel and their families is receiving “serious and continuous attention” from the Army Headquarters. He stated that the Nigerian Army remains fully committed to prioritising the welfare of troops and their families, noting that it is a critical factor in achieving sustained operational success.

Beyond immediate operational needs, the COAS disclosed concrete plans to improve the living standards of families stationed in Bida. He announced the construction of additional accommodation facilities to reduce overcrowding and improve living conditions. Furthermore, the Army plans to establish skills acquisition centres aimed at providing economic opportunities and vocational training for the spouses and dependents of soldiers.

While praising the troops for their dedication to maintaining relative peace within Niger State, General Shaibu maintained a firm stance on the ongoing security challenges.

He charged the soldiers to remain resolute in their mission to degrade and neutralise bandits and terrorists operating in the region. The visit concluded with a clear directive to the troops to continue the offensive to restore public confidence and ensure a secure environment for the citizens of Niger State.
