Activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore has alleged that a magistrate court sitting in Mararaba, near Abuja, ordered the remand of activist Mamhud Abdul in Keffi prison despite his return from the United Kingdom to face trial voluntarily.
In a post shared on February 27, which was seen by Securitynewsalert.com, Sowore said he was informed about the development by Abdul himself earlier in the day.
According to him, the court’s decision has raised concerns among activists and supporters who have been following the case.
“I was informed this morning by Comrade Mamhud Abdul that a magistrate sitting in Mararaba, near Abuja, has ordered that he be remanded in Keffi prison,” Sowore said.
Sowore noted that Abdul had returned to Nigeria from the United Kingdom specifically to attend court proceedings in the matter, which he said had been ongoing for some time. He described the remand order as troubling, given the circumstances surrounding the case.
The activist also alleged that the case originated from a disagreement with a senior officer of the Nigeria Police Force, identified as Deputy Police Commissioner Amabua Muhammed, whom he accused of exerting influence over the proceedings.
“The matter, which began in 2023, has become one of the most troubling examples of abuse linked to the Nigeria Police Force in recent times,” Sowore wrote.
He called on the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to discontinue the case and other matters he described as involving alleged police misconduct against citizens.
“The Acting Inspector-General of Police must discontinue this matter immediately, along with other cases involving police misconduct brought against conscientious citizens across Nigeria,” he added.
As of the time of reporting, the police authorities had not issued an official response to the allegations raised by Sowore. Activists on social media have also begun circulating the hashtag #FreeAbdulMamhudNow while calling for a review of the case.
