Sowore Faces Backlash Over Criticism of New IGP Tunji Disu as ‘weak’

-

Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has come under intense fire after criticising newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tunji Disu and describing him as weak.

Sowore, known for his outspoken activism and confrontational style, accused the new police chief of incompetence, leading to a heated debate across social media.

Tunji Disu was appointed less than two weeks ago to lead the Nigerian Police Force, following years of public demand for reform and accountability within the institution.

His appointment has been viewed by some as politically influenced, with critics alleging ties to President Bola Tinubu’s political camp. Others, however, argue that Disu deserves time to settle into the role before being judged.

Sowore’s remarks quickly ignited reactions online. Some Nigerians accused him of rushing to condemn a man who had barely assumed office. “@TunjiDisu1 has not even spent 7 days in office, and you are already having issues with the man. Sowore, what exactly do you want?” one user wrote, reflecting a common sentiment that the activist was being unfair.

Another added, “The new IGP is not even up to a week in the office, and you’re already having issues with him? What exactly do you want him to do about a case that’s already in court?”

Others went further, questioning Sowore’s credibility. “You couldn’t even manage your small political party, let alone ever winning any election. You are just an attention-seeking rabble-rouser,” one critic posted.

Another accused him of sensationalism, saying, “Egbon, you will not succeed using social media sensationalism to blackmail IGP @TunjiDisu1 to do your unconstitutional bids.”

Yet not all voices were against Sowore. Some supporters defended his activism, insisting that human rights abuses should be called out immediately.

“We are talking of human rights abuse, and you fools are saying they should give him time to settle,” one commenter argued.

Another suggested that Disu’s appointment was not based on merit, claiming, “Tunji Deji was appointed not by merit but by political affiliation with Tinubu Emilokan… he will never do what will go against his master.”

The debate also touched on broader issues of police reform and political influence.

Some users alleged that church leaders and politicians have long manipulated police promotions, eroding the institution’s integrity.

Others pointed to past controversies involving figures like Maureen Badejo, arguing that cases already in court should not be politicised or used to pressure the new IGP.

Sowore’s critics accused him of being perpetually dissatisfied with leadership in Nigeria.

“Is there anyone good enough in your books? Only you is the Saint and the most competent,” one user remarked.

Another added, “Even if Jesu Kristi ọmọ Josẹfu becomes Nigeria IGP, you will never be satisfied.”
