The Elegant Nurses Forum (ENF) has issued a formal update regarding the ongoing assault case involving Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Odusola Oluwakemi and Head of Nursing Services (HNS) Fagoyinbo Ganiyat of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta.
According to the ENF National Coordinator, Nurse Thomas Abiodun Olamide, the incident left CNO Oluwakemi with life-threatening injuries, requiring urgent medical intervention. “We thank God for her recovery and the medical care that saved her life,” Olamide stated.
ENF emphasised that workplace violence has no place in healthcare institutions, stressing that hospitals must remain safe environments for staff and patients alike.
Following the assault, ENF petitioned the Ogun State Police Command. Both parties were invited for questioning, and statements were taken. FMC Abeokuta management later sought mediation through a reconciliatory committee, but efforts reportedly failed.
As a result, HNS Fagoyinbo Ganiyat was charged in court earlier today. She was granted bail under strict conditions, including two sureties, evidence of tax payment by the sureties, and proof that the sureties own verifiable landed property within Ogun State. Her bail was perfected within hours, and she has since been released. The case, however, remains before the court.
The Elegant Nurses Forum has demanded the immediate suspension of HNS Fagoyinbo Ganiyat pending the court’s final decision. They also called for the appointment of a neutral officer in an acting capacity to oversee Nursing Services, a thorough administrative investigation into the assault and prior complaints against the HNS, and the enforcement of a zero-tolerance policy on workplace violence across healthcare institutions.
ENF further insisted on adequate protection for nurses and healthcare workers who report abuse or harassment, assurances that no staff member will face victimisation for cooperating with law enforcement, and regular training on conflict management, professional conduct, and workplace ethics.
Reaffirming its commitment to defending oppressed nurses and ensuring justice, ENF declared: “An injury to one Nurse is an injury to the entire Nursing profession.”
