Delta Police Arrest Suspected Drug Dealer, Intercept 21 Bags of Indian Hemp

-

The Delta State Police Command has intensified its intelligence-led crackdown on illicit drug trafficking, recording the arrest of a suspected drug dealer and the interception of a large consignment of suspected Indian hemp in separate operations across the state.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed the developments in a statement on Friday, noting that the operations were carried out under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi.

According to Edafe, operatives of the Ugborikoko Division on April 8, 2026, at about 12:00 p.m., intercepted a tricyclist, identified as Evans Emmanuel Akpowene, along Airport Road in Effurun during routine traffic duties.

“The suspect’s behaviour aroused suspicion, prompting a search of the tricycle. A strong odour led operatives to discover a large quantity of substances suspected to be illicit drugs, including Indian hemp, Canada Loud, Colorado, and Monkey Tail,” Edafe said.

He added that the suspect, along with the recovered substances and the tricycle bearing registration number EFR 173 VD, is currently in police custody, while investigations are ongoing.

In a separate operation, Edafe revealed that operatives of the Dragon Patrol Team, on April 2, 2026, at about 1:00 p.m., intercepted a gold-coloured Toyota Sienna bus along the Ozoro/Kwale Road by Ebendo Community in Ndokwa West Local Government Area.

“On sighting the police, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled into the bush. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of twenty-one bags of substances suspected to be Indian hemp,” he stated.

The police spokesperson noted that the vehicle and exhibits have been recovered, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

Commending the vigilance and professionalism of the operatives, the Commissioner of Police reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for drug-related offences.

He urged members of the public, particularly youths, to refrain from engaging in illicit drug activities and called on residents to support the police with credible information to aid ongoing operations.
