Delta Police Intensify Security Operations, Strengthen Emergency Response Across State

-

The Delta State Police Command has announced a series of enhanced security measures aimed at improving public safety and curbing crime across the state.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the initiative followed a comprehensive review of the security situation and aligns with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, mandating commands nationwide to adopt intelligence-driven policing and strengthen community partnerships.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, has ordered the “massive deployment of personnel across all nine Area Commands, divisions, and other critical points within the state.”

“This includes intensified stop-and-search operations along major highways, entry and exit routes, and identified flashpoints, as well as sustained day and night visibility patrols and coordinated operations with sister security agencies,” the statement said.

The Command noted that its operational priorities have been streamlined to focus on “the protection of lives and property, maintenance of law and order, prevention of unlawful gatherings, and disruption of criminal networks.”

It added that intelligence-led raids on identified black spots and hideouts would be sustained, while community engagement efforts would be strengthened to improve information gathering.

The police also disclosed that targeted operations were underway to tackle kidnapping and herdsmen-related crimes in key flashpoints, including Owa-Oyibu, Ogwashi-Uku power line axis, Okpanam, Ashaka, Ovwero in Ughelli North, Umunede, Igbodo, Idumusa, and Ute, as well as other border communities.

“These operations are aimed at dislodging criminal elements, restoring public confidence, and securing all entry and exit corridors within Delta State,” the statement added.

As part of community policing efforts, the Commissioner of Police has directed all Area Commanders to convene stakeholders’ town hall meetings within their jurisdictions.

“This is to strengthen community engagement, enhance intelligence gathering, and foster collaborative approaches to addressing security challenges,” Edafe said.

The Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through its control room lines, assuring that all reports would be treated with confidentiality and acted upon promptly. It also highlighted dedicated Complaint Response Unit (CRU) lines for reporting police misconduct and human rights violations.

Reassuring residents of the Command’s commitment, Oyeniyi said officers have been briefed to operate with professionalism and respect for human rights.

“Security is a collective responsibility,” he said, urging the public to provide credible and timely information while warning against the spread of unverified information capable of causing panic.

He also called on parents, community leaders, and transport unions to support ongoing efforts to maintain law and order across the state.
