Delta Police Quells Violent Disturbances in Asaba During New Year Celebrations

-

The Delta State Police Command says it has decisively quelled violent disturbances in parts of the Asaba metropolis after hoodlums attempted to hijack New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, disclosed that at about 12:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 1, 2026, operatives led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations embarked on a robust township patrol.

The patrol team, which included Divisional Police Officers, Tactical Commanders, and their men, was deployed to ensure the safety of residents and commuters during the festivities.

According to the Command, miscreants and criminal elements took advantage of the large celebratory crowds to engage in acts of lawlessness. These included blocking major roads, staging illegal car races, reckless driving that injured commuters, throwing fireworks at innocent members of the public, and causing widespread disturbances.

The situation escalated when the hoodlums launched violent attacks on police patrol teams, hurling stones and other dangerous projectiles, and burning tyres at key junctions. These actions deliberately obstructed free movement, particularly for worshippers returning from New Year church services.
Police operatives responded swiftly, deploying lawful crowd control measures to disperse the mob and restore order.

As a result of the operation, 43 suspects were arrested. Items recovered included 25 motor vehicles, 8 tricycles, fireworks, various hard drugs, and offensive weapons. The suspects are currently in custody, with investigations ongoing to determine their level of involvement before they are charged in court.
The Command condemned the criminal acts, warning that any attempt to exploit festive periods to foment violence, obstruct public roads, or attack security personnel will be met with firm resistance.
Normalcy has since been restored in Asaba, with intensified patrols continuing to forestall further breaches of peace. The Command assured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging the public to celebrate responsibly, obey the law, and report suspicious activities promptly.
