Reports of a deadly attack in Benue State on New Year’s Eve 2026 have triggered widespread outrage and intense debate on social media, with users blaming government inaction and expressing fears over worsening insecurity in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
Several social media users alleged that dozens of people were killed during an attack on communities in Benue State on the night of December 31, 2026.
One user, posting under the name Queen Bee, claimed that “at least 65 bodies” had been counted, though no official confirmation of the figure had been released by security agencies as of the time of reporting.
The alleged attack occurred amid renewed criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, with some commentators questioning the government’s response to violent attacks across the country. The claims sparked an emotional outpouring online, with users expressing grief, anger and frustration.
“This should never be happening,” one user wrote, lamenting what they described as persistent killings in the state. Others called on residents to defend themselves, while some questioned why communities appeared unable to resist repeated attacks.
The incident also reignited long-standing debates over national unity, ethnicity and religion. Some users blamed “Fulani terrorists” for the violence and accused the federal government of failing to protect vulnerable communities.
Others went further, making calls for drastic political changes or foreign military intervention statements that reflect the depth of public anger but remain controversial.
Several comments also criticised political leaders and parties, linking insecurity to electoral outcomes and governance failures. Several users accused politicians of exploiting violence for political gain or neglecting affected communities during election periods.
At the same time, a few voices cautioned against blanket accusations and religious generalisations, stressing that extremism should not be conflated with entire ethnic or religious groups.
Benue State has for years been a flashpoint for violent clashes, often linked to disputes between farmers and armed groups, banditry and broader security challenges in Nigeria’s Middle Belt. Despite repeated assurances from successive governments, residents continue to report deadly attacks on rural communities.
As of press time, neither the Benue State Government nor the Nigeria Police Force had issued an official statement confirming the reported casualty figures or detailing the circumstances of the New Year’s Eve incident.
