…CP order personnel detained, defaulted, now awaiting orderly room trial

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police has ordered the arrest and detention of an Assistant Superintendent of Police and a Police Sergeant, both attached to Ibara Police Station, for allegedly allowing a suspect to escape while under their guard.

The suspect, Lekan Adekanbi, whose crime securitynewsalert.com could not ascertain as at the time of filing in this report, was said to have escaped from police custody, plunging the station and the command into a panic.

According to police sources, it is believed that the ASP and Sergeant collaborated with the suspect to hatch a plan on how to escape from police detention.

The suspect was said to have first feigned being sick, then collapsed and was then rushed to hospital, from where he disappeared into thin air while being guarded by the ASP and Sergeant.

The incident, which happened on the 2nd of January 2023, naturally attracted the ire of the CP.

The CP, therefore, ordered the arrest and detention of ASP Usman Adamu with AP 136689 and Sergeant Amusan Ibrahim, Force number 508451, who was supposed to guard the fleeing suspect.

The sources stated that the matter was brought to the attention of the CP by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Ibara Police Station.

The sources further explained: “On 2nd of December 2023, DPO Ibara Police Station visited the cell in the station for routine checking of suspects detained in the cell. In the process, it was discovered that a suspect named Lekan Adekanbi suddenly collapsed inside the cell. The DPO promptly ordered the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) and men at the station to rush him to the police medical facility at Oke Ilewo for treatment.

“While the suspect was undergoing treatment therein. AP 136689 ASP Usman Adamu and Force number 508451 Sergeant Amusan Ibrahim, who was guarding the suspect in the facility deliberately and negligently allowed him to escape to an unknown destination.

“All the nooks and crannies of Ibara and the entire Abeokuta are being combed for possible rearrest of the suspect. The ASP had been queried and the sergeant had been detained in the cell, defaulted, and awaiting orderly room trial.”
