The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched a serious internal investigation following a grave allegation of extortion made by Nigerian rapper, Oladipupo Olabode Oladimeji, widely known as Oladips.
The hip-hop artist alleges that EFCC operatives extorted N10,000,000 (Ten Million Naira) from him to secure his release after he was arrested alongside individuals suspected of internet fraud.
In response to the musician’s public claim, the EFCC issued a statement expressing its commitment to integrity and vowing to get to the bottom of the matter.
“The Commission wishes to state unreservedly that the grim picture painted by the artist does not reflect the true picture of the EFCC,” the statement read. “We have seen his claims and have commenced investigations on them accordingly.”
Taking immediate action, the anti-graft agency confirmed that the officers involved in Oladip’s case have been summoned to the Corporate Headquarters and have been relieved of their operational duties pending the conclusion of the internal probe.
The Commission emphasised its zero-tolerance stance on corruption within its ranks.
“The Commission is serious about its value of integrity and will take necessary action against any staff found to be culpable,” the EFCC stated.
The statement also cautioned against the deliberate spread of misinformation, indicating that sanctions could be imposed if the rapper’s claims are found to be unfounded.
“It is also needful to state that if the allegation is found to be false and raised to malign the Commission or tarnish its image, appropriate sanctions will also be imposed,” the EFCC added.
The agency has called on the public to await the result of its investigations and maintain faith in its ongoing efforts to combat economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption across the country.
