The Federal Government’s independent committee investigating the reported deaths of 37 persons in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State has requested a two-week extension to complete its assignment, NTA reports.
Chairman of the committee, Jonathan Kure, said the panel had made appreciable progress since its inauguration, including inspecting the custody facility, conducting autopsies and obtaining statements from NSCDC personnel, survivors, families of the deceased and other witnesses.
Kure said the additional two weeks would enable the committee to properly review the volume of evidence and testimonies gathered during the investigation.
He added that the extension would also provide an opportunity for all persons implicated in the incident to respond to the allegations against them.
The committee is now expected to conclude its investigation and submit its report to the Federal Government by October 21, 2026.
The probe followed reports of the deaths of 37 persons while in NSCDC custody in Niger State, prompting concerns over the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the treatment of detainees in the facility.
